Who You Are

You’re someone who enjoys collating and researching technical information, tribunal decisions, policy and current issues and then transforming your findings into briefing material and Commission members’ instructions into records of decision. You enjoy drafting records of decisions in a clear, concise and widely understood manner. As a problem solver, you know how to move past challenges to ensure that important work continues to get done. You also like to be an insider and working closely with decision makers.

What You’ll do

As part of a dynamic team, you’ll work with your colleagues to provide technical support to our Commission Members in the areas of administrative law, regulatory instruments, technical and scientific matters or current issues. You’ll research information and write papers for Commission Members on a variety of technical topics in support of their work to make licensing and regulatory decisions. A primary function is to assist the Commission in drafting decisions and minutes following public Commission hearings and meetings. You’ll also provide technical support to CNSC staff who rely on you to provide advice and guidance on Commission member regulatory documents and Commission proceedings. To ensure that Commission proceedings operate seamlessly, you’ll actively participate in dry runs with staff and offer them your guidance.

Essential Qualifications

Education:
University degree in science, engineering or law or a combination of education, experience and job knowledge as outlined in this statement of qualification may be considered

Language Requirements:
English essential

Experience:
  • Working in a regulated industry, administrative tribunal or quasi-judicial administrative tribunal, ideally in a science-related field
  • Reading, understanding and summarizing complex technical documents
  • Preparing comprehensive written reports and/or meeting summaries
  • Carrying out research projects, preparing written reports of that work and communicating results
  • Participating in meetings with Commission members, executive staff and/or appointed representatives

Knowledge of:
  • The CNSC legislative environment, including the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, the Impact Assessment Act, the Rules of Procedure, the Commission By-Laws, the delegated authorities given to CNSC staff, the General Regulations, and other Regulations under the NSCA
  • Research methodologies and analysis techniques designed to support high quality research, document preparation, effective communication and presentations
  • Nuclear and energy sectors
  • National and international current affairs, incidents and issues impacting nuclear energy and materials and the mandate of the CNSC

Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing

Operational Needs

  • All CNSC staff are subject to the Mobility Directive.
  • This position may require occasional travel
  • Overtime: Some overtime may be required.
