The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education encompasses the three counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving 5757 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Title: Child & Youth Care Practitioner (CYCP)

Reports to: Principal - Sept to June

Schools Plus Facilitator/Student Services Coordinator - July and August

Description

Within a needs based and inclusive approach, the Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYCP) works with assigned students in schools and is responsible for collaborating with school teams to help design and carry out proactive, evidence based programming for students who have social, emotional and behavior issues. This may include:
  • Working with students directly in education settings, identifying services for students who have difficulty coping in school/education settings
  • Engaging in, and supporting effective connections and communications between the school, the families and other appropriate community agencies to meet student needs.
  • Working collaboratively with families, administrators, classroom teachers, teacher assistants, SchoolsPlus, specialist staff, community based agencies, programs, services and supports.
  • Assisting students to develop social skills and self-regulation through community based, recreation, summer and after school programs.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma or certificate such as Nova Scotia Community College: Child & Youth Care Practitioner Program diploma is required.
  • The diploma or certificate includes study and practicums focused on: growth and development, relational child and youth care practices and ethics, principles of behavior, activity based interventions and observation skills.
  • Experience working with children and youth in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Membership in the NS Child and Youth Care Workers’ Association is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Nonviolent crisis intervention
Experience
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with school aged children and youth is required.
  • Experience working in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Direct knowledge and experience of the community served is an asset.
Abilities / Competencies

The Child and Youth Care Practitioner shall have the following competencies:
  • The ability to establish proactive relationships with and provide appropriate interventions for vulnerable children and youth impacted by developmental trauma and or behaviour, social and mental health challenges.
  • The ability to apply evidence informed interventions related to social emotional learning and culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • The ability to apply knowledge of early childhood development as it relates to academic and social success through a multi-tiered support system (MTSS).
  • The ability to collaboratively program plan to support academic and social success for students.
  • The ability to apply effective mediation and conflict resolution strategies.
  • The ability to work effectively in flexible work situations; i.e. visit homes when required to provide the link between the school and the home to support student success.
  • The ability to utilize current technologies to support students experiencing self-regulation and communication challenges.
  • The ability to work & communicate effectively with students.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development.
  • The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with teachers, teacher assistants, administrators, specialists and others to support the implementation of appropriate interventions and programming for assigned students.
  • Provide support to teacher assistants who work with students with identified needs.
  • The ability to use approaches such as functional analysis of behavior.
  • Coordinate and contribute to the effective implementation of strategies and good practices, such as a positive reinforcement system, visual schedule, movement breaks, etc.
  • Contribute to building a healthy and safe school environment by supporting positive behaviors
  • Maintain progressive files and notes for identified students.
This position does not follow the school calendar - 7 Hours per day - Monday to Friday - SEIU
