Position

A worker in this position is responsible for ensuring that public circulation spaces {entrances, hallways, stairwells, lounges, etc.) are kept in a clean and tidy manner. Under the guidance of the Facilities Services Supervisor, the Building Service Worker is responsible to provide services in specified areas comprised of several buildings and to maintain a clean, comfortable, and healthy environment for students, staff and visitors to the University. In addition, also responds to maintenance calls {unplugging toilets, sinks, etc.), operational concerns and requests received via-2-way radio.

Duties

  • Keep the public circulation areas clean by the completing following activities:
    • Dusting
    • Cleaning glass, doors, drinking fountains, elevators, escalators
    • Sweeping, dry/wet moping, vacuuming
    • Clean up of spills
    • Polishing brass, chrome, stainless steel, etc.
    • Monitoring cleaning requirements in high traffic washrooms
    • Removal of vandalism
  • First responder of Control Center and Maintenance Desk requests
  • Enter mechanical rooms or respond to maintenance calls to perform first level assessment
  • Inspect machine rooms for leaks, unusual noises, temperature and pressure gauges of multiple machine rooms once per shift
  • Have knowledge of building to know where the secondary electrical panels are located to reset breakers and working knowledge of electrical panels
  • Change light bulbs - fluorescent lamps and recognize when a ballast requires replacement
  • Collection of recycle materials and redistribute the bins
  • Snow removal from entrance doors
  • Recognize when furniture layout is incorrect and rearrange as required
  • Garbage removal
  • Report incidence of vandalism, security concerns and safety issues to appropriate personnel

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 10
  • General knowledge of HVAC and Building Mechanical systems is required
  • Good working knowledge of English language, verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • A high degree of initiative and versatility, coupled with an in-depth knowledge of operational and mechanical requirements is required in this position

Preferred Qualifications

  • Building Services Worker Certificate is considered an asset
  • WHMIS, safety, fire extinguisher and first aid training is considered an asset
