Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Facility Manager, the Building Engineer is responsible for the general maintenance of the Pan Am Clinic. This position has sole responsibility for all industrial systems relating to power, heat, air and water. The Building Engineer has a wide spectrum of knowledge about building systems and their individual components and understands the building itself as a large integrated system. The building engineer works independently and requires an in-depth knowledge of all O & M Manuals in order to operate and maintain the facilities various systems and equipment. The Building Engineer is responsible for: preventative and corrective maintenance, repair and cleaning of electrical /mechanical equipment and building systems that provide light, heat, power, water, air conditioning and other services for the facilities; maintaining accurate documentation; maintaining stock control; maintaining a clean and safe grounds environment including snow removal and lawn care; and performing other related duties as required. Performs all duties in accordance with established health and safety regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (e.g. utilizing personal, protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies supervisor of all facility occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns that are likely to harm them, their co-workers, or any others who enter the premises.

Experience

  • Required: At least five years experiences in a relevant field, preferably in a healthcare environment, in all phases of installation, commissioning, start up, maintenance and servicing of facility and program-related systems. Experience in technical documentation of facility systems, problem solving and project completion. Experience in the inspection of work of outside contractors, and commissioning of new systems. Knowledge of applicable codes and standards and other relevant legislated acts including WHMIS. Ability to work independently. Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Respects the privacy and rights of patients/staff. Demonstrated ability to maintain good working relationships with supervisor, peers and clients.
  • Preferred: Experience in the development of preventative maintenance routines for equipment and systems. Project management experience. Demonstrated computer software skills.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Valid 4th Class Power Engineer’s Certificate.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle required.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand blueprints and specifications of new construction, installation and maintenance of equipment would be considered an asset.
  • Requires analytical and problem solving skills and very effective organizational skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Good physical and mental health required.
  • Position may require climbing ladders, scaffolding, high-level platforms or going into confined spaces and enclosures.
  • Manual dexterity and physically able to carry and move loads up to 34 kg.

This term position may end earlier as outlined in your collective bargaining agreement


This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
