Building and Design Technologist

Role Description

An exciting opportunity to work with the real estate construction team of Kal Tire. The Building and Design Technologist is responsible for AutoCAD design related to building or renovation of Kal Tire store locations, warehouses, and retread plants. This role works closely with Project Managers and a variety of internal and external stakeholders on all aspects of construction projects, from design inception to completion of construction. To assist locations with their responsibility of reducing rejections and other issues related to National Accounts.

Responsibilities
  • Compiles conceptual layouts based on Kal Tire prototype standards and local city requirements; creates floor plans, exterior and interior elevations, or electrical, mechanical, and civil plans.
  • Assists in preparing and distributing “Issued for Construction” drawings as required that adhere to Provincial and National building codes.
  • Produces Change Order and Site Instruction drawings as required.
  • Maintains the AutoCAD Block library.
  • Completes Municipal Zoning Bylaw and OCP reviews related to Site Planning (setbacks, site coverage, building heights, landscape, signage, etc.)
  • Maintains Prototype Design packages; updates packages with latest initiatives and information required for Developers & Engineers
  • Compiles exterior façade renderings using PhotoShop or equivalent program.
  • May assist in creation of drawings other than Kal Tire designs (residential type construction and/or other types of commercial/industrial construction)
  • Provides assistance to Project Coordinator & Project Managers to coordinate all aspects of procurement and delivery of owner/tenant furniture, fixtures and equipment.
  • Assists in maintaining Kal Tire’s AutoCAD library and digital drawing inventory.
  • Assists in construction document management.
  • Assists in maintaining departmental library of drawing files, as-built drawings, maintenance manuals, Job binders, Approval binders, etc.
  • Provides property details to the Lease Administrator on new and renovated facilities to be documented in Kal Tire lease administration program (APEX)

Work Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years’ drafting experience
  • Minimum 1 years’ experience with building design

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 suite, specifically Word and Excel
  • Proficient with Google Earth and Maps
  • General knowledge of residential, commercial, and industrial construction terminology and methodology
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints and /or technical manuals.
  • Proficient in AutoDesk - Architectural DeskTop
  • Experience with PhotoShop or an equivalent rendering program
  • Ability to produce hand sketches (ie. On-site as-builts)
  • Experience with REVIT is considered an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of the automotive industry
  • Knowledge of Architectural, Structural, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical design and planning principals.
  • Familiar with municipal bylaw language
  • Self-motivated with continuous learning mindset, invested in ongoing professional development.

Education:
  • Technology Diploma (Architectural or Construction Preferred)
  • ASCT designation

Special Requirements:
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Moderate physical activity, work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Flexible and willing to travel occasionally, as required.
