The ONA is currently seeking to employ a Laboratory Biologist 1 within their fisheries department. The successful applicant should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic results-based environment and have excellent problem solving, communication, supervision, time management, and safety management skills. As a Laboratory Fisheries Biologist based out of Penticton, you will undertake duties associated with the Okanagan Nation Alliance’s fisheries projects throughout the Okanagan.

Key Duties and Responsibilities attached to this position are:

  • Organizing, participating in, and leading, short-term projects such as field, and laboratory studies.
  • Conduct and participate in the collection, preservation, processing, and analysis of biological, chemical or physical samples, data and information.
  • Maintain and calibrate instrumentation and assist with development of protocols for the collection and analysis of research data.
  • Conduct quality control/quality assurance principles for projects managed.
  • Assists with internal reports, provides technical updates, works in team fashion within own and other departments to contribute and support strategic objectives.
  • Participate in smaller scientific, departmental, interdepartmental, sub-committees and sub-working groups, to promote the Fisheries and conduct presentations.
  • Other duties as discussed and agreed upon.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor of Science degree preferably with fisheries related studies and (1) one-year work related experience within a laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience working with a First Nation band or within a First Nations environment is desirable.
  • Some knowledge and abilities in human resources, administrative, financial, and project management is an asset.
  • Experience with scientific sampling theory and techniques.
  • Ability to provide training and capacity development.
  • Ability to create reports and complete planning.
  • Ability to use various software and associated programs.
  • A valid class 5 BC driver’s license.
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety.
  • Ability to travel, work flexible hours/willingness to work evenings and weekends.
  • Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Aboriginal ancestry.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.70-$32.07 per hour
