Associate Director - Medical Coding

This is what you will do:

The Associate Director, Medical Coding will be responsible for delivery of the highest quality medical coding for individual clinical trials, clinical development programs, and regulatory submissions. This position will collaborate with the Director, Medical Coding and Clinical Data Review to develop a long-term coding strategy that will help to ensure Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease meets industry and quality requirements for clinical trials and will implement coding processes ensuring best practices in medical coding and dictionary management. They will also serve as a subject matter expert for all topics pertaining to the use of medical coding in statistical analysis, impact assessment for dictionary up versions and safety signaling.

You will be responsible for:

  • Medical coding deliverables and activities that support Alexion regulatory commitments including submission of safety data
  • Serving as a medical coding subject matter expert
  • Partnering with stakeholders to optimize technology that supports efficient dictionary management processes and overseeing vendor coding quality
  • Developing, implementing, and ongoing evaluating of Alexion coding conventions to ensure consistency and optimizing integration capabilities within and across therapeutic areas and programs
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with vendors performing clinical trial coding, ensuring high quality deliverables, consistent application of coding conventions, implementation, and oversight of metrics to ensure quality and productivity, appropriate resourcing, and process improvements as necessary
  • Developing and maintaining coding and dictionary management process for Alexion in collaboration with key stakeholders
  • Reviewing program and study level clinical trial, serious adverse events (SAE), concomitant medications and other relevant data performed by vendors for quality and consistency

You will need to have:

  • Bachelor of Science Nursing or other medical sciences with 5 years of experience in a medical/clinical research environment
  • Minimum of 5 years coding experience with exposure to rare disease indications
  • Proficiency in the structure, management, and application of MedDRA and WHO Drug dictionaries across the drug development spectrum (Phase I through post-marketing safety data management)
  • Working knowledge of one or more coding and clinical trial data management systems (Oracle Clinical, Oracle TMS, Medidata RAVE, InForm, etc.)
  • Experience overseeing vendors performing clinical trial medical coding
  • Experience developing and maintaining coding processes and conventions
  • The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment. As is typical of an office-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to: use a computer; engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; problem solve; engage in complex and non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue; collaborate with others; maintain general availability during standard business hours

We would prefer for you to have:

  • Familiarity with WHO Drug B3 reporting requirements
  • Knowledge of MedDRA SMQ search strategies
  • Prior experience collaborating with Data Management
  • Demonstrated ability in strategic thinking, risk assessment and mitigation
  • Demonstrated ability in a matrix role management and communication with interdisciplinary teams
  • Strong negotiation and conflict resolution and team building skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Work, Excel, Project, Visio) and report tools such as Elluminate, Spotfire or JReview
