Your Opportunity:

The Central Zone Communicable Disease Control (CDC) Assist Head Nurse works within the Population, Public, and Indigenous Health Division of Alberta Health Services and reports directly to the Associate Manager Notifiable Diseases, South. The CDC nurse will have responsibilities that will include both communicable disease and immunization content. The CDC nurse is the clinical nurse lead/educator and expert resource to support the Central Zone Medical Officers of Health and zone Public Health staff in public health investigation, follow up of notifiable and non-notifiable diseases, outbreak management in community settings, and community blood and body fluid exposures follow-up (BBFE) as mandated under the Alberta Public Health Act. The CDC nurse will also act as an expert resource to support immunization programs for public health staff, community providers and the general public. Through quality assurance work, in collaboration with the Public Health Area Managers and staff, the CDC nurse will provide recommendations on best practice in service delivery of immunizations. The CDC nurse will attend staff meetings, in-services and may participate in committee work or be asked to perform other duties as assigned. On a rotational basis, the CZ CDC nurse works on call after business hours. During this on call period the CDC nurse acts as the MOH designate for urgent notifiable disease and non-notifiable disease (e.g. BBFE, post exposure rabies) issues.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience as a Registered Nurse with a minimum of 2 years recent (within the past 5 years) experience at a 0.50 FTE or greater in Alberta in a public health nursing position is required. Demonstrated skills and experience with immunization and/or communicable disease public health management. Comprehensive knowledge of the Alberta provincial immunization program, schedule and standards required. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required. Ability to work independently with little supervision, to work well in teams in both zone and site capacities, as well as demonstrated excellent leadership, organizational, analytical, and decision making skills are required. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in keyboarding and computer applications including word processing (PowerPoint, Word, Outlook), and Internet access are required. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary health care team required. Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain collaborative working relationships within the interdisciplinary team. Be self-directed and exercise decision making, sound nursing judgement and critical thinking skills. Exhibit strong time management and prioritization skills, with a demonstrated ability to function effectively within a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge and experience in communicable disease control within Alberta preferred. Experience with immunization and/or communicable disease databases an asset. Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred; however, education, skills and experience relevant to nursing practice in community sector will be considered. Transportation of Dangerous Goods 6.2.
