Job Summary

The Civil Resolution Tribunal (CRT) is an independent, quasi-judicial tribunal that operates under the authority of the Civil Resolution Tribunal Act. The CRT is Canada’s first online tribunal and currently provides end-to-end dispute resolution services for strata property disputes and small claims up to $5,000. The tribunal also has jurisdiction to resolve motor vehicle personal injury disputes, accident responsibility claims and some disputes involving incorporated societies and cooperative associations.

The paralegal position provides services to CRT Legal Counsel, the CRT Chair and the CRT Executive Director & Registrar. These services include: general legal support for the delivery of the CRT’s dispute resolution services; coordinating responses to records requests under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and investigations by the Office of the Ombudsperson; coordinating the CRT’s Independent Medical Examination process; supporting litigation matters when required.

Job Requirements:

  • Certificate or Diploma or Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution and:
    • Minimum of one (1) year experience as a paralegal; OR,
    • Minimum of two (2) years recent (within the last 5 years) experience working in an office environment handling confidential material.
  • The CRT will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Professional or volunteer experience that includes the following:

  • Experience in the interpretation and application of legislation, regulations, and policies.
  • Experience drafting legal documents such as pleadings or affidavits.
  • Experience applying the theories and principles of administrative law including procedural fairness and natural justice.
  • Experience providing competent, timely, respectful, quality service to the public in a high-volume, fast paced environment.
  • Experience managing a high-volume case load.
  • Experience working respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.


Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • A paralegal certificate or diploma.
  • Two (2)or more years experience working as a paralegal or three (3) or more years experience working as a legal assistant.
  • Experience working in an administrative tribunal.
  • Experience working with FIPPA or other regulations, policies, and procedures related to the collection, use and disclosure of information.
  • Experience working in a near paperless environment, using only online or computer-based systems to manage work, document outcomes and record statistical data.
  • Who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit).
