Job Overview:

The Department of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology-BMT at CancerCare Manitoba is seeking a Physician Assistant, Monday to Fridays, to aid in the care of infants, children, and adolescents with a variety of malignant and non-malignant conditions.


The Physician Assistant within Pediatric HematoIogy-Oncology-BMT will become an integrated member of the multidisciplinary team. Initially the position will involve seeing patients in the outpatient clinic setting, and over time, will include a transition to the inpatient setting, with ability to work flexibly between both settings according to the demands of the day.


A rotation schedule for the outpatient and inpatient areas will eventually be established between the Department’s current physician assistant and the new hire. The physician assistant will progress in their responsibilities in a graduated manner, initially working closely with all the Department’s Pediatric Hematologists-Oncologists while developing increasing independence over time. Types of patients the physician assistant would manage in the outpatient setting will include children with acute leukemia on maintenance chemotherapy, admissions to hospital for chemotherapy and complications (such as febrile neutropenia), transfusion support for hematology patients, health maintenance for sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, routine care of brain tumor patients, and post-blood and marrow transplant patient management. The physician assistant will become independent over time in performing lumbar punctures with intrathecal chemotherapy, bone marrow aspirates and biopsies, and will assist in bone marrow harvests when required. In the inpatient setting, the physician assistant will be responsible for all patients admitted to hospital (in partnership with the pediatric oncologist) and will lead morning rounds, see all patients, write notes, manage all aspects of supportive care (e.g., TPN, antibiotics, antiemetics), and be responsible for discharge summaries. The physician assistant will also be assigned other duties and responsibilities deemed appropriate by Department Head of Pediatric Hematology-OncoIogy- BMT.


Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master of Physician Assistant studies
  • Knowledge of Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other pertinent legislations and regulations
  • Meeting the professional standards and standards of practice of medicine of the College of Physician and Surgeons of Manitoba
  • Ability to work in a computerized environment.
  • Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Be willing to attend scientific meetings and/or conferences for the purpose of continuing professional development.
  • Be physically fit to meet job requirements
  • Eligible to work legally in Canada

Asset:

  • Previous experience in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology-BMT and/or Pediatrics is desirable but not required.
  • Ability to communicate in French

Salary: As per PCAM Collective Agreement
